The flutter butterfly activity is one of my bestselling crafts.

It’s a straightforward, virtually mess-free activity that can be done in one sitting or broken up into stages depending on the child’s or adult’s energy levels.

What I especially love is that no matter the colouring skill level, the results will turn out completely unique and often striking.

For regular makers this activity should feel intuitive to make; however, for those less confident there are clear step-by-step instructions available for you to follow.

All you need is the printout, your favourite colouring materials, a good pair of scissors and the watchful eye of a parent/caregiver.

It’s the perfect activity to create something beautiful whilst also having the opportunity to have a mindful and calm moment. Plus, the cleanup is minimal.

Suggestions

  • Instructions can be read digitally or printed on basic printer paper
  • For the best ‘fluttering’ effect, print the butterfly template on thicker card stock
  • If you don’t have thicker card, print on basic printer paper and stick onto a cereal box to help give your butterfly more structure
  • To save on ink, print in grayscale (unless you want a colour version of the red admiral)
  • Consider what colouring mediums you intend to use before printing. For example, crayon and colouring pencils will work fine on standard crafting card but paint may be too wet.
