Vocabulary for an information detective

Fact – Something that can be proven true or false Example: “Dogs have four legs” is a fact

Opinion – What someone thinks or believes Example: “Dogs are the best pets” is an opinion

Source – Where information comes from Example: “I read this in my science book”

Evidence – Proof that shows something is true Example: Photos, measurements, or things you can see

Expert – Someone who knows a lot about one topic Example: A vet is an expert about animals

Primary Source – Information from when something actually happened Example: A diary written during a historical event

Secondary Source – Information written about something later Example: A textbook about that same historical event

Bias – When someone likes one thing more and it affects what they say Example: A soccer fan might think soccer is better than all other sports

Reliable – Information you can trust to be true Example: Information from a museum is usually reliable

Citation – Saying where you got your information Example: “I learned this from page 15 of my animal book”
