Waterwise have launched it’s water saving week for the 8th year with the aim to help us get better at saving water with some water saving tips.
If all of us added some of these small water-saving habits into our daily routine we could make a big impact on water conservation.
Here’s just a few ideas that I have discovered through Waterwise and other resources to help you save water.
1. Fill the kettle with what you need
If you over fill your kettle it doesn’t just use extra water it uses more energy.
2. Make use of of your Eco settings
Most large appliances like dishwashers and washing machines have an eco setting. This not only saves water but also energy.
3. Run appliances on full
Save energy and water by making sure you run you dishwashers and washing machines on full.
4. Save, Scrape and don’t rinse
Most dishwashers are very effective at cleaning, so save those leftovers and scrape off anything left into your food waste bin or compost and save water by not rinsing.
5. Install a rainwater butt
Use this water to water your plants.
6. Ditch the water hose and sprinklers
And use a watering can instead – that way you can control your water usage.
7. Fix a leaky tap
8. Fix a leaky loo!
Did you know that on average, a leaking toilet wastes between 215 and 400 litres of clean drinking water every day? Find out more about how to work out if your loo is leaking and what you can do to fix it here.
9. Use leftover water to water plants
If you wash your fruit and veg in a bowl, the excess water when finished can be used to water plants. Plus, if you aren’t going to use the water you used to boil/cook veg for stocks, why not use this to water plants too (wait until it’s cooled of course!).
10. Fill up a jug of water and chill
Instead of running the tap until it’s cold for your drink, try filling up a jug of water and chilling it in the fridge.
11. Stop the tap
Stop the tap from running whilst you brush your teeth.
12. Take a 4 minute shower instead of a bath
A top tip for this is to play your favourite 4 minute song or see if you water company will give you a timer for free. (Spotify is full of 4 minute long song playlists).
