With the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch at the end of the month, let’s test your bird identification skills and help you get ready for some fun bird spotting. Can you correctly identify these birds from their shadows (silhouettes)?

#1. Can you correctly identify this common garden bird from their silhouette?
The correct answer is Wood Pigeon. They are much larger and fuller in shape than feral pigeons and the sleeker collared dove.
#2. Can you identify this songbird from their silhouette?
The correct answer is a Starling. Tip – look out for the sharp pointed beak and hackle throat feathers. The feathers on their head are often raised and they sing in an upright position.
#3. Can you correctly identify this tiny bird from it's silhouette?
The correct answer is Wren. They are one of the UK’s smallest birds. Look out for their rounded shape and upright tail. Listen out for their booming song. They maybe small but the call is LOUD.
#4. Can you correctly identify this omnivorous garden bird from their silhouette?
The correct answer is the Robin. Their iconic red breast is the first clue, they often appear squat with a roundish tummy, however watch out they can also appear much sleeker and upright depending on the time of year. Watch out for juvenile robin’s in the spring with their golden brown spotted plumage.

The correct answer is magpie! These are one of the larger birds that you will find in your garden. Their long tail and size will help you to identify them if you can’t see their striking contrasting markings.
#6. Can you correctly identify this noisy sociable bird from their silhouette?
The correct answer is Long Tailed Tit. Look out for a small bird no larger than 14cm, with a small round body, tiny beak and long tail. They are regularly seen in groups of up to 20.
#7. Can you correctly identify this common garden bird by their silhouette?
The correct answer is House Sparrow! They are very sociable birds usually seen in large groups. They love to hang out in hedgerows and roof tops/gutters. Listen out for their noisy chatter.
#8. Can you correctly identify this common finch from their silhouette?
These striking birds have a wonderful unique call and they are usually pretty noisy when they feed. Their striking red face and yellow wing patches will help you to identify them, but if they are in shadow use their sharp beak and sleak upright body to help you identify them. Don’t forget to learn their calls/song.
#9. Can you correctly identify this member of the tit family from their silhouette?
The correct answer is blue tit. The blue head patch and wings and yellow tummy will help you to identify them. They are smaller than great tits (which many confuse them with).
#10. Can you correctly identify this medium sized garden bird from their silhouette?
The correct answer is Blackbird.
