Happy International Sloth Day

20th October 2026

Did you know?

A sloth’s fur is like a mini jungle! It’s home to bacteria, insects, fungi and algae.

Some moths live their whole lives on sloths. Female moths lay eggs in sloth poo on the ground. When the moths grow up, they fly back to live and mate in the sloth’s fur.

Sloths and green algae help each other. The sloth eats some algae for food, and the algae gets a wet, cosy home (sloth fur holds lots of water).

The green algae also works as camouflage. Predators like eagles and jaguars hunt by spotting movement. The sloth’s green fur and stillness make them almost invisible in the trees.
